The Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is an iconic structure known the world over. It is the largest steel arch ever built.

When we first came to live in Sydney, we rented an apartment in Kirribilli in the shadow of the bridge for our first year.

During that time I gazed in wonder out of our window at the bridge. I was inspired to take many pictures. From simple beginnings became this project.

The bridge encompasses many facets; design, grand scale, beacon to the world, and, of course transport. The first reason to build the bridge was built to improve communication between the North and South parts of Sydney. Bridging the harbour was a necessary step to facilitate continued economic growth.

But the bridge also had form. Its four towers (two at each end) were built purely for cosmetic effect as an architectural feature. The expense was controversial at the time. However, the argument in favour of building a structure with aesthetic appeal was won.

Today the bridge stands as a beacon. A symbol of the city.
